The base of the general map of tectonic zoning of the territory of Russia is the “The scheme of tectonic zoning of Russia in scale 1:5000000”, actualized by the data of the State geological map of the Russian Federation in scale 1:1000000 (third generation) as well as numerous publications of the Interregional Center for Geological Mapping (Geokart) and other data published in 2001 and last few years.
The map shows: (a) basic tectonic taxons of different ranks; (b) general historic and tectonic subdivisions, such as megastages, stages and phases of tectogenesis (they are shown in different colors on the map), in the course of which structural and material features of basic taxons were formed; (c) names and symbols of tectonic (geodynamic) settings in which structural and material complexes were formed; (d) complete series of tectonic megacomplexes, complexes and subcomplexes in geological sections of basic taxons; (e) groups of geological formations in structural floors, stages and substages; (f) depths of occurrence of ancient platform (microcontinents) basements and datum horizons in the covers of platform provinces.
Basic units of tectonic zoning are including taxons of different ranks: superglobal, global, transregional, regional and territorial. They are represented respectively by: (1) lithospheric and crustal plates; (2) platform and oceanic megaprovinces, orogenic and mobile belts; (3) platform, passive margin and oceanic provinces, shields of ancient platforms, orogenic, island-arc and active margin areas; (4) platform, passive margin and oceanic subprovinces, megazones of orogenic areas; (5) zones and basins – continent-rifts, platform, orogenic, island-arc, active-margin and other.
The general map of tectonic zoning of the territory of Russia (in scale 1:10000000) was created in the course of preparation of “The Tectonic Code of Russia” and is its inherent part. The Code is planned to be published in 2016.
