Mapping in the Zhenyuan area reveals the first diamond-bearing rock in China. It is not only the most important and richest diamond outcrop area in south China but also an important area of primary diamond exploration in China. The nomenclature of diamond-bearing rocks is contentious and this hinders the study to some degree. In the 1980s the diamond-bearing rock was first named mica kimberlite. LUO Hui-wen, after comparison with Argyle lamproite, identified the diamond-bearing mother rock and similar rocks in Zhenyuan area as lamproites. Since then discussion of rock names in Zhenyuan area and the discussion of the crust-mantle properties, structural environment and diamond formation have never stopped.
