Palaeo-water depth and its change with time is a key factor in oil and gas bearing basin analysis. In this paper, our research will focus on proxies for palaeo-bathymetry as obtained from the recent seismic interpretation complemented with sedimentary study. The palaeo water depth in Sha3 epoch of Paleogene was over 500m and even to 1290m in Bohai bay basin. This ultra deep water is an important factor to form the high quality source rock and associated turbidite and to form the tight oil traps or fluvial sandstone oil traps and delta sandstone oil traps in the lower water level stage. This ultra deep water is also the key factor to form the good source rocks and in turn to make the Bohai bay basin rich in oil and gas.
